Online dating has a pretty bad reputation despite being super-effective for matchmaking. Most people enjoy dating in person because they can be themselves. Others tend to shy away from social events and be themselves online.

Simply put, dating online isn’t for everyone. So, how does it get so many bad reviews and comments? Fortunately for you, we’ll be talking about a few online dating myths that will boggle your mind.

People tend to say that online relationships take too much effort or that they’re too old for it. However, in reality, plenty of folks above 30 find dating easier online. A few other myths say:

Online Dating is for Hookups

Not real! Most people dating online are looking for long-lasting relationships. You can indeed use dating apps for hookups because it’s more convenient. But, the number of people using it for hookups can’t compare to the number of successful couples who met online.

It’s for Desperate People

Not real! Trying to find love through dating apps should never be shamed. Online dating is not the final option. It’s the most used method to find dates, partners, and even spouses.

Desperation means that there isn’t any other choice. Yet, if you ask anyone in your friend circles, they’ll say that they’ve used a dating app once or twice. This myth is truly just a myth.

Online Dating is Dangerous

Might be real? This is where dating online gets its notorious reputation. Stuff like the “Craigslist Killer” or “Tinder Swindler” gives online dating a bad name. However, these are just isolated cases.

If you think about it, the chance of this happening to you is quite low. Even more, dating apps and sites give you the chance to talk to the person before meeting them. Isn’t that safer than trying to find a date in a bar?

Dating Online Ruins the In-Person Experience

Not real! People tend to complain that dating apps and sites ruin traditional dating because you can just swipe right and find someone. However, the facts are that you are still going to meet that person and have an entire dating experience.

As we said, online dating is only there to help with matchmaking. It helps you find potential partners with mutual interests. Talking and spending time with those potential partners is still done in person.

Online Relationships Don’t Last Long

Not real! There is no proof that relationships that started online are short-lived. The truth of the matter is — that online dating is no different from traditional dating. Being incompatible with someone is the only way for relationships to not last long.

Guess what? This also applies to traditional dating. Core traits required for traditional dates, like commitment, communication, and compromise, are still needed to make online relationships work.

Myth Busted

The bad reputation that online dating gets is a hoax because it’s something new. When it became a trend, most people were doubtful of the new territory to explore.

Our advice? Don’t be concerned with the reputation. Online dating is accessible to everyone, but not everyone wants to access it. Stay safe, and date away!
