Seeking love abroad is becoming more and more popular these days.

I’ll use the numbers and explain to you why.

Data shows that the number of online dating users grew to 323.9 million resulting in $5.61 billion in revenue for the top dating platform. In the U.S., the age range of dating app users is 18–29 years old for casual relationships.

Meanwhile, people looking for serious relationships are those who are 30–64 years old. They prefer matchmaking websites, and users over 65 choose religious dating sites.

Regarding users of different races, the percentage of the population who uses online dating platforms for those who are white is 29%, for black is 31%, and for Hispanics is 28%.

Approximately 42% of users are dating to marry. About 13% consider themselves as lucky ones who got engaged as they met their one true love online.

Significant Causes and Effects of This 21st-Century Dating Phenomenon

Globalization, the rise of mobile technology, and the power of the internet have made finding a potential partner from a foreign country more accessible than ever. Online dating as a profitable industry has continuously risen over the years since finding foreign love has become a popular choice for many singles.

However, transnational couples with diverse cultural upbringings may find it challenging to navigate cultural barriers. These barriers create complexities in several things including language, religion, or customs.

Overcoming Cultural Barriers

One of the most challenging elements in a multicultural relationship is overcoming cultural barriers. Immigrants in America raised in a different background may be familiar with the ways of the west. However, their habits and attitude may still have traces of their original culture.

Interracial relationships can be complicated, especially if the partners have significant cultural differences. It is crucial to research different cultural norms if you are dating someone from another country. This will help avoid any cultural barriers that could arise.

Here’s how to overcome the three main cultural barriers in dating:

  • Language Barrier

English is a dominant language. But suppose you’re a Westerner dating an Asian woman. In that case, she might have difficulties understanding if you speak too quickly or uses too much slang.

You can use a translator app and stick to simple words. You can also use non-verbal communication such as hand gestures or facial expressions and even learn her foreign language.

  • Clashing Ethics/Values

Conflicts happen when our own values are compromised by the actions of others. When you don’t understand or agree with their behavior, it often indicates competing ideals at play.

It’s best to find common ground because there’s no right or wrong way to do anything. Try to understand your partner’s cultural norms and determine how things are done with flexibility.

  • Stereotyping

When dating, you should avoid making crude generalizations about foreigners.

But because every person is different, it is impossible to predict how they will act just by looking at their nationality. Just keep an open mind and hold your thoughts when it comes to social stigmas.

The 3 Important Practices

  • Explore the family dynamic.

Knowing how families operate in your partner’s country is essential. It may be acceptable for partners to have an affair or get married without parental consent in certain places.

Some families may also expect their children to marry within their own race for religious reasons. Regarding courtship or marriage rituals, Asian families are more traditional and religious than those from the West.

  • Be aware of cultural differences.

Cultural differences might lead to total misunderstanding. People from other cultures communicate differently, not just through words but by action and body language.

All of this has the potential to cause significant confusion and unwelcome tension. So it’s important to have cultural awareness by knowing how different your foreign date’s unique traditions and beliefs are from yours.

  • Establish clear boundaries.

Like any partnership, the shared commonalities are the foundation of international dating rather than cultural disparities. Nevertheless, it would be naive to think we haven’t been shaped by our civilizations.

Acknowledging these disparities, preconceptions, and even prejudices is crucial to building stronger relationships and gaining a deeper understanding of one another’s families and histories. They give us the chance to grow and embrace even more, not drive us away.

Ultimately, it’s best to build healthy boundaries. These rules will help you form meaningful connections for lifelong companionship with your foreign partner without losing a sense of self-identity
