Statistics reveal that divorce rates among those over-60s, particularly in Western countries, are on the rise. Many factors contribute to this trend, such as women’s increasing financial independence and the pressures couples face as they age.

When it comes to love, going through a divorce is never easy. It’s especially hard when you’re older. You aren’t just letting go of your spouse, but of a life and family that took decades to build.

The separation may also involve legal matters such as gaining custody of the children and possessions. So when a marital split happens, it can feel like death to those involved.

Adding to their sorrows is the fact that in their older age, they may have given up the possibility of ever experiencing romantic love again.

It’s difficult to completely put the past behind you and move forward without lingering feelings of regret or melancholy.

But let me give you some advice on moving forward with your life as a divorcee in your 60s.

Rediscover your identity

Sometimes, the only way that we realize who we really are is by experiencing life alone. As long as you are alive, you will not completely discover yourself until you experience things alone.

Getting divorced can help you figure out who you are and what you want in life. If you have been married in the past, you may need to redefine yourself after divorce.

Make sure you spend time doing things that interest you, such as reading books, going to museums, taking walks, playing sports, etc. These activities will give you a chance to reevaluate your priorities in life and figure out who you want to become as you make the most of the remaining years of your life.

Spend time with your children

Children are the pride and joy of most parents. When you are in your 60s, chances are that your children have lives and families of their own.

Many parents feel that they have not spent enough time with their children when they were growing up, perhaps because they were too busy working and earning to support the family.

So if you feel that you have much to make up to your children, you still have time to do that. So invite them over for dinner, offer to spend time with your grandchildren, and offer to help out with their own struggles.

You will experience a lot of fulfillment when you choose to help and serve the ones you love the most.

Take control of your dating life.

Many people fear living and dying alone in old age. If you are recently divorced, regardless of age, you may feel the urge to meet someone new.

Research reveals that at least 20% of men ages 60+ and women ages 60–69 had married twice. Hence, you still have a chance of finding true love in the 21st-century dating landscape, even if you’re divorced in your 60s.

Nowadays, you can explore online services such as dating apps and matchmaking services. But if you get involved in casual flings, your experience re-entering the dating scene may feel unsatisfying.

Of course, you have the freedom to date anyone. Just make sure to choose wisely, and you’re dating someone with compatibility. It’s in your hands to find your lifelong companion and spend the remainder of your life with them.

Ultimately, it requires significant courage and a strong will to start anew after going through a divorce in your 60s. May these tips help you get back on your feet. Best wishes!
